Gran Canaria your way: what to see, where to stay and how to plan your holiday
A practical Gran Canaria guide: beaches, excursions, golf, food, a suggested week and hotels for families, couples and relaxed holidays.

Golden dunes, mountain villages, the Atlantic and hotels for different holiday preferences.
A morning walk by the ocean, an afternoon view of volcanic mountains and dinner on the promenade in the evening. Gran Canaria is varied enough that you do not need the same programme every day — and pleasant enough to enjoy a day with no plans at all. The south offers beaches and resorts, the interior ravines and pine forests, while the north reveals the island’s towns, villages and a different, greener side.
When choosing your holiday, it is worth answering one question first: do you want more time by the pool, to explore the island, to play golf or to enjoy a peaceful break for two? The right location makes a bigger difference than an extra star on the hotel sign.
South or north? Choose your pace first
Meloneras suits guests who appreciate a well-kept promenade, oceanfront dinners and the comfort of larger premium resorts. With the lighthouse and Maspalomas dunes nearby, even a short evening walk becomes part of the holiday experience. A good choice for couples, wellness breaks and golfers.
Maspalomas appeals with its long sandy shoreline and famous dunes. It suits guests who enjoy walking by the sea and having plenty of space for relaxed days. Check the location of your accommodation: the area is extensive and not every hotel is right by the beach.
San Agustín is a quieter alternative to the livelier resorts. Its volcanic-sand beach, coastal walks and less pronounced evening bustle suit couples and families. The distinction between a hotel directly by the sea and a resort on a hillside matters.
Playa del Inglés suits guests who want a beach, shops, restaurants and evening entertainment close to their accommodation. It is suitable for friends and active holidaymakers; if you seek peace, choose your hotel location and room more carefully.
Amadores and Puerto de Mogán are appealing for quieter coastal days. Amadores has a sheltered bay, while Puerto de Mogán offers a harbour, flower-filled streets and a smaller beach. Choose Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to combine city life, culture and Las Canteras beach.
When to travel and how to reach the island?
Gran Canaria is appealing throughout the year, especially as an escape during the colder months. The south is generally drier and sunnier, while the north and higher elevations have a different microclimate. Do not expect summer heat every day in winter; take an extra layer for evenings and mountain excursions. For winter holidays with children, also check whether the hotel pool is heated.
Gran Canaria Airport has the code LPA. Longevity Travel also offers packages with a direct flight from Ljubljana; we check the actual dates, baggage allowance and included transfers when preparing your offer. Local time on the island is one hour behind Slovenia.
Experiences worth leaving your hotel for
Maspalomas: dunes, lighthouse and long walks
The dunes are the most recognisable sight in the south: wind-shaped sand with the ocean beyond. Choose morning or late afternoon for a walk, when the light is softer. From the lighthouse, continue towards the Meloneras promenade and stop for a drink or dinner. The dunes are a protected nature reserve — use marked, permitted paths and do not walk through protected areas.
Puerto de Mogán: lunch by the harbour
White houses, colourful flowers and moorings create a different atmosphere from the large southern resorts. The best visit is simple: a stroll through the streets, lunch by the harbour and time on the smaller beach. Visit Amadores separately or add it as another stop if you want to finish the day with a swim, not just photographs.
Tejeda and Roque Nublo: the island’s mountain side
In Gran Canaria’s interior, coastal hotels give way to ravines, pine forests and sweeping views. Tejeda is a pleasant stop for a walk, coffee and an almond dessert. Roque Nublo is a symbol of the island’s volcanic landscape, but a visit is no longer something to decide on only when you reach the car park.
Access via the S-70 trail at Degollada de La Goleta requires an advance reservation. Before setting off, check the current rules, weather, parking and connections with organised transport. Plan your hike with suitable footwear, water and sun protection; choose another day in poor weather. Winding mountain roads take more time than the map might suggest.
Las Palmas: history and a city beach in one day
Begin in the historic district of Vegueta, around Plaza de Santa Ana and the cathedral, then continue through Triana. Spend the afternoon at Las Canteras beach and its promenade. The city is also a good choice for a day when you want more local life, cafés and food than a hotel programme. The historic centre and Las Canteras are separate parts of the city, so plan transport between them.
The north: Arucas and Agaete
Arucas is interesting for its striking neo-Gothic church and old town. Agaete, with the harbour of Puerto de las Nieves, white and blue houses and a coffee-growing valley, reveals a quieter side of the island. Book a producer visit and tasting in advance. Visit the natural pools only in suitable conditions; in heavy swell, observe them from a safe distance instead.
Another idea: Fataga, a village of white houses, narrow streets and palm trees in the rugged interior. Choose it for a shorter excursion from the south, rather than another stop on an already overfilled full-day itinerary.
Beaches and family days
For long walks, choose Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés. Amadores and the smaller beach in Puerto de Mogán are appealing for a family day by a bay, San Agustín for a quieter seaside atmosphere, and Las Canteras for a beach with city restaurants behind it.
A sheltered bay does not mean swimming is always safe. Follow the flags, lifeguard warnings and sea conditions. When travelling with children, check the route to the beach, pool heating, room layout and the children’s club age requirements. A few days without a car also make perfect sense on Gran Canaria — if you choose suitable accommodation.
Golf and time to relax
Gran Canaria allows you to combine a day on the course with lunch, a coastal walk or a spa visit. Maspalomas Golf has a relatively flat layout and wide playing areas beside the dunes. Meloneras Golf combines play with ocean views and is appealing for guests staying at resorts in Meloneras. For a different backdrop, you can add Anfi Tauro or Salobre to the programme.
Do not leave golf rounds until the end of your planning: coordinate tee times, transfers, equipment hire and any buggy use in good time. If not everyone in your party plays golf, choose a hotel where the others have enough options for an enjoyable day of their own. A hotel spa does not mean all admission and treatments are included in the room rate.
What to try on Gran Canaria?
Order papas arrugadas with mojo sauce, fresh fish, local cheese or a dish made with gofio, the traditional flour made from roasted grains. In Tejeda, try bienmesabe, an almond dessert, and in the Agaete valley, local coffee. The island also has its own wines and a rich selection of tropical fruit.
If you intend to explore extensively and have lunch away from the hotel, a stay with breakfast is often more flexible. All inclusive is convenient for families and guests who spend most of the day at the resort. Half board offers a middle ground — but check what it includes, especially drinks and speciality restaurants.
A suggested week that is not overcrowded
- Day 1: arrival, settling in and a short walk near the hotel.
- Day 2: beach, Maspalomas dunes and an evening in Meloneras.
- Day 3: Puerto de Mogán; an optional stop at Amadores beach.
- Day 4: relaxation at the hotel, golf or wellness.
- Day 5: Tejeda and the mountain landscape; Roque Nublo only with access arranged and suitable weather.
- Day 6: Las Palmas or a separate excursion to Arucas and Agaete — not everything in one day.
- Day 7: a free day for your favourite beach, another round of golf or a relaxed lunch.
Adjust the order to the weather and the length of your stay. For excursions into the island’s interior, choose a hire car or an organised tour; if you use the bus, also check the return timetable before setting off.
Where to stay? Longevity Travel’s selection
Abora Interclub Atlantic by Lopesan Hotels, San Agustín
For families seeking a lively all-inclusive resort with gardens, pools, water-based fun and a children’s programme. The hotel occupies an elevated location, so it is not the same choice as a hotel directly on the beach. Its main strength is comfortable holiday life within the resort, where children and adults have different ways to spend the day.
Corallium Beach by Lopesan Hotels, San Agustín
For couples, friends and solo travellers seeking an adults-only break for guests aged 18 or over. Direct access to San Agustín beach and a quieter character provide a good base for walks, swimming and a slower pace. Choose it if proximity to the sea matters more to you than a large family programme.
Lopesan Villa del Conde Resort & Thalasso, Meloneras
For guests who value space, architecture and a hotel with a distinctly Canarian character. Inspired by an island village, the resort features a central square, gardens and passages between buildings. Its thalasso facilities and Meloneras location are appealing for couples, wellness guests and golfers who want to combine a comfortable stay with exploring the surrounding area.
Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort & Spa, Meloneras
For guests seeking a larger premium resort, a pool-focused setting, varied dining and spa facilities. Its promenade location near the lighthouse and dunes makes for pleasant evenings outside the hotel, too. A good option for couples, families and golfers who enjoy a wide choice of hotel facilities.
Green Field, Playa del Inglés
For guests who prefer studios or apartments with a kitchen and a practical base in a lively resort. The beach, shops and restaurants are nearby, making it suitable for a more independent break and exploring the south. This is not the same hotel experience as the premium resorts in Meloneras — its emphasis is on practicality and flexibility.
Before confirmation, we check: your selected room, location and view, board basis, flight, baggage, transfers and any supplements. Inclusions depend on the specific package; a label on a hotel card is no substitute for a detailed offer.
