New York to Ljubljana nonstop: United Airlines opens a new gateway to Slovenia in 2027

United Airlines will launch nonstop Newark–Ljubljana flights in May 2027. Discover Ljubljana and an easy journey through Slovenia, from the Alps to the Mediterranean.

A new nonstop United Airlines route will connect New York/Newark with Ljubljana from May 2027, making Slovenia easier to reach from the United States and opening the door to a remarkably varied European journey.

United Airlines has announced a new nonstop service between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU), planned to begin on 12 May 2027. Flights are scheduled four times a week on a Boeing 767-400ER, subject to government approval.

The route will restore direct scheduled air travel between Slovenia and the United States after 36 years. For travellers from the New York area and those connecting through United's Newark hub, Slovenia will become much simpler to reach: one overnight flight, no European connection and an arrival close to the country's capital.

A relaxed arrival in Ljubljana

Ljubljana is an ideal introduction to Slovenia. It has the culture and confidence of a European capital, yet it remains compact, green and easy to explore on foot.

The Ljubljanica River runs through the centre, lined with cafés, colonnades and bridges shaped by architect Jože Plečnik. The Central Market, Dragon Bridge and Ljubljana Castle are all natural stops during a first visit, while the pedestrian old town invites a slower pace.

A morning can begin with coffee beside the river and continue through the market and Plečnik's architecture. By evening, the focus shifts naturally to seasonal Slovenian cuisine, local wines and small restaurants rather than a long list of sights to rush through.

From the capital to the Alps

Slovenia's scale is one of its greatest advantages. From Ljubljana, the Alpine world is close enough for a day trip, but it deserves longer.

Continue towards the Adriatic and the atmosphere becomes Mediterranean. Piran is the natural highlight: a historic coastal town of narrow lanes, Venetian architecture and views across the sea. Nearby salt pans preserve a tradition that shaped the town's history.

For food and wine, the Vipava Valley and Goriška Brda offer intimate wineries, seasonal cooking and landscapes that sit between the Alps and the Adriatic. They work especially well as a slower final chapter after Ljubljana and the mountains.

One small country, many different journeys

Slovenia brings together Alpine, Mediterranean, Karst and Pannonian landscapes within just over 20,000 square kilometres.

Even the most distant parts of the country are generally within two to three hours of Ljubljana.
